Coding, De-Coded

"Coding". It's the buzz-word of the 21st century.

Why is this helpful in teaching? As teachers, it is your responsibility to prepare your students for the future job market and world. Coding is a newer skillset taught in schools, alongside the development and importance of STEM education.

--Before you begin: Watch this an intro video to coding. Here are fun activities, to introduce coding to your students, before going on computers.

Here's a snapshot of what coding looks like!

--My suggestion: incorporate coding into your lesson plan by having your students create a website. That way, you can combine this skill with ANY lesson you are currently teaching. There are lots of resources available to help you create websites and help with learning how to code. Below are my favorites...

PSA: You will NOT need any knowledge about website design before reading this article. ALL are welcome.
  1. CHOOSE THE LANGUAGE. Before jumping into designing your own website from scratch, you must understand the coding language. The most common computer language is JavaScript...but you are welcome to train on any/all of them (ex: Python).

  2. CHOOSE THE PROGRAM. Once you understand what coding is, you need to learn how to code. Here are my suggested programs to learn how to code: Code Academy, Khan Academy, and Code.org.

  3. BUILD A WEBSITE. To build your own website from scratch, I suggest using TextWrangler. Before you do, watch this introductory video about HTML and CSS. Here's a tutorial on TextWrangler.

  4. BUILD ANOTHER WEBSITE. To design websites easily, use Wix. Wix has been so easy to use (I promise I am not making commission off this!) and you can make it look however you would like! There is a lot of room for creativity. If Wix is not for you, Weebly and SquareSpace are two other great website-building tools to use. Here's a tutorial using Wix. Here's a tutorial using Weebly. Here's a tutorial using SquareSpace.

--For students excelling through this material, have them play coding games, such as Code Combat and Embeddable Games!
